I remember those days when I would wake up, take one look at my hair, and just want to shave it all off. It was a weird, wavy, frizzy, coarse mess that I couldn’t figure out what to do with. I would pull out my (ancient) curling iron and try to somehow emulate those effortless locks of the cover girls on Pinterest. It was all for not, however, as I quickly remembered just how much my hair *hates* heat of any kind. With hair ruined even further, I would frustratedly braid it into some updo and call it a day.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Ladies, it’s time to stop settling for the sub-par. It’s time to stop hating on our hair. Today, I want to present two lifestyle changes that have dramatically impacted and streamlined my hair routine, while boosting my confidence and self-image. Sound too good to be true? Trust me, it isn’t. Let’s just dive right in…
#1 Embrace Your Natural Hair Type
Did you know that there are hair types, just like there are personality types? Yeah, neither did I until recently. I used to just think my hair was weird. I never thought of it as “naturally curly”, and didn’t even know where to begin as far as enhancing its natural beauty. It wasn’t until I joined a facebook group for naturally curly girls, and found naturallycurly.com that my world was turned around.
The Natural Hair Movement
There’s an incredibly powerful movement going on that I hope you will join me in. African-American ladies are setting down their relaxers and straightening irons to embrace their naturally gorgeous kinky-curly hair. Caucasian gals like myself are realizing those weird waves we always get after swimming and showering actually have the potential to become luscious curls that give the curling iron manufacturers a run for their money. What was deemed ugly and unkempt just a few decades ago is now coming into vogue in full-force: I’m talking about the natural hair movement.
Doesn’t it make sense, though? Wouldn’t a creative God who made butterflies and intricate flower petals, give humans insanely creative hair types too? And just like I believe God gave each of us an energy type that expresses itself through our faces & bodies, the same goes for our hair. Each of us has a unique head of hair that is a reflection of the God-given personality inside, and it’s about time we embraced it for what it naturally is.
It’s time for a change
Whether your hair is naturally pin-straight, or wild as a lion’s mane, it’s time to stop hating it. It’s time to set down those toxic products, perms, relaxers, and heat tools, and learn to work with your hair, rather than against it.
As soon as I began researching the heck out of my hair type on naturallycurly.com, I began to truly fall in love with what God creatively design specifically for me. I would encourage you to really learn about your hair. Invest some time in understanding what it was naturally made to do. Whether that means pin-straight or mermaid waves, it’s uniquely yours and a beautiful expression of inside-out beauty.
#2 Invest in your Hair
As I researched my hair type and dug through the archives of naturallycurly.com, I began to realize something: my hair is worth investing in.
Often times the stress and insecurity we experience as a result of our hair can be fixed 1) once we embrace our natural hair type, and 2) when we equip ourselves with the tools we need to tend to it properly. What am I talking about? Nutrition, Cut, and Products.
Nutrition for Healthy Hair
Let’s talk health first. More often than not, any form of hair thinning or lack-luster locks is most likely due to diet, hormones, and stress. If you want gorgeous hair, you need to tend to your lifestyle.
Ditch those hormone-disrupting fragrances and health-disturbing chemicals that are hiding in your bathroom cabinets. Invest in high-quality supplements that will balance your hormones and nourish your body. Create healthy habits throughout your day that encourage peace and comfort, rather than stress and anxiety.

Invest in the Right Cut
I’m a go-getter. The moment I began reading up on my hair type, and the Curly Girl Method of taking care of my hair, I was full-force investing in products. There was one issue though: my hair cut. I had grown it out to mid-back, and it was damaged from heat tools and ombre-highlights. It felt dead and coarse. No matter the products I put on it, it was lack-luster and frizzy to no end. I knew it was time to give my haircut some TLC.
I got about 8-10 inches cut off, but over time I realized that I still had damaged hair. Why? Well, my hair type requires a certain type of cut to help the curls form well. Tools like razors, irons, and toxic-chemical-laden products all have a bad impact on hair in general. I began researching some more, and found a hairdresser who would respect my curl pattern, and cut to enhance it rather than hiding it.
Guys, there is such a massive difference when you invest in a high-end haircut. I’m not talking about a cheap cut from Great Clips. I’m talking about hiring a hair artist: someone who views each cut as an extension of themselves, and has massive respect for your hair and what YOU want! I walked out of that appointment with 3-5 inches further shed, and an overwhelming supply of self-confidence. I still get chills just thinking about it.
A professional cut is life-changing, friends. I would encourage you to invest in one and see the impact it has on embracing your natural hair type. Find a stylist who won’t torture your hair with heat and chemicals, but will instead fall in love with your natural hair type, and encourage you to do the same.
Invest in the Right Products
I used to be a simpleton when it came to hair products outside of shampoo & conditioner. I used *maybe* one all through my teen years, and that one was just homemade flaxseed hair gel. And I didn’t ever apply properly, either. Yep, I was a bit of a disaster, I know. 😉
Once again, I’ll take you back to my ecstasy researching on naturallycurly.com, only this time making a mile-long wishlist of all the products that I wanted to try out. If you’ve ever been a plain-Jane like me when it comes to hair products, girl, it’s time for a change.
I can’t even begin to describe the difference I have seen in my hair since investing in the right products. Was it a pain finding something that lived up to my toxin-free standards? Yes. But, it was sooooo worth it! My hair has never been so happy, wavy, or healthy. Just like makeup enhances your natural features, the right hair products will enhance your natural hair type.
As far as where you should start in figuring out what hair products to invest in, I would encourage you to schedule a hair appointment first. The right stylist will recommend product types specifically around the style you are trying to achieve and the hair you naturally have.
It’s up to You!
Are you tired of being frustrated and stressed about your hair every single day? Maybe you work in a professional environment like me, and want to make a good impression on your co-workers? Or, maybe you’ve finally outgrown a certain style, and are ready for a refresh. Girl, it’s time to embrace your natural hair type.
Embracing my natural hair has streamlined my routine, and boosted my confidence to new levels. I am so thankful I invested the time (and money) in caring for my temple & enhancing my natural beauty. I would wholeheartedly encourage you to do the same.
