Now before I get started, let me just disclaim that this is not a self-love post in the usual sense of the term. I’m not here to gloat or boast, or anything of that nature. I’m here to tell you guys about my journey to healing and learning to embrace who I am as a unique daughter of Christ, and how that has empowered me to further His kingdom! Ready? Let’s goooo! 😀
A New Way of Thinking
Today we’re going to talk about something very near and dear to my heart: a fashion course called Dressing Your Truth. We girls discovered this course about a year and a half ago and mentioned it briefly on here once or twice. We actually became chicken after doing a little more research behind it, and shut up about it for a while because the foundation of the course could be taken the wrong way (and we did 😉 ).
Praise the Lord, our hearts have been opened up to a whole new world of understanding of how our spiritual souls interact with physical elements through understanding emotions, energy, essential oils, and more from a Christian perspective. To put it briefly, God has made us so intricately and profoundly, I don’t think we’ve even scratched the surface of how humans work with all our modern medical knowledge or ancient holistic practices. There is so much more than meets the eye.
Anyhow, what does all this have to do with fashion? Well, I believe our clothing is inseparably linked to how we express who we are as unique individuals. It’s a way to communicate how we feel, what we’re going through, and who we want to identify as. My sisters and I have understood that for most of our lives as young adults, but I don’t think as deeply as we understand it now. Dressing Your Truth played an important role in expanding our knowledge of how clothing works with our unique personalities, and in turn embracing our unique identity in Christ.
What is Dressing Your Truth?
So what is Dressing Your Truth? It’s a free program that helps you identify your type (there are 4 in total), and how to dress according to that type. Unlike personality tests or color systems which are more surface-level, Dressing Your Truth delves into Energy Types. Meaning, how you move through the world (spiritually, mentally, and physically) and interact with your surroundings. It’s much deeper than a “personality type” could ever be.
Because there are only 4 dominant types to choose from, it’s very broad and allows for greater individuality within the types. You also have a secondary energy that influences and helps explain your quirks within your dominant energy type. Also, your type doesn’t change. Unlike “personalities types” which can change, your energy type is the same from the time you were born. For some, it may be hard to identify 100% what your type is because of past trauma, emotional bonds, and mental abuse. But this is one of the most freeing parts of Dressing Your Truth. Once you identify your type, you have a way to understand why you are the way you are and find your true identity as a unique individual made in the likeness of Christ, beyond your emotional bonds and bruises. There is an outlet for healing and embracing your unique beauty.
Who Am I?
So what type am I? Well, I am a Type 3, Secondary 1, which is actually the highest movement of Energy for humans. I move through life swiftly and dynamically and have a rich, substantial quality about me. My voice is loud, my footstep is heavy, my body language is big, and I tend to find my way into leadership roles and push through projects with a swift force. My secondary 1 brings in a lighter element. I am a fun-loving individual, and I am very animated and charismatic with how I interact with others. I love to put a smile on people’s faces and associate with light-heartedness and freshness. I can tend to be a bit random, impulsive and squirrel-y, and I am constantly coming up with new ideas and executing them.
How does this come out in my appearance? My facial features are angular and asymmetrical. I have exotic eyes that are set on a V, and when I smile my whole face lights up and creates swift lines all over my face.
Through Dressing Your Truth I learned that to express my energy type and really settle into “me”, I can wear certain colors, design lines, textures, patterns, and fabrications that are unique to my type:
I wear rich shades, which means pure color mixed with different levels of black (think jewel and/or dirty colors like peacock blue or mustard yellow). I go for a lot of substantial, rich texture and prints, and the design lines of my clothing are swift and asymmetrical. My jewelry is very substantial and dynamic with lots of texture. Anything angular is my best friend. My hair is crazy, wild, and free. Think of a lion’s mane, and you’ve got it just about right. If by this point you have Wonder Woman envisioned in your head, then I’ve done my job. 😉
My keywords are Rich, Dynamic, Substantial, Swift, Animated, and Fresh.
My Journey to Me!
I didn’t start to really dress my truth 100% until this year. After I joined the Type 3 facebook group, I was suddenly plugged into a community of women who were just.like.me. It was insane. There is still tons of diversity, yet somehow all of us have this rich, swift energy that is just infectious. After discovering and joining this group, the truth of my type came home even stronger. I was able to identify things in my life that I had never understood before: why I acted a certain way, why I preferred this over that, why I get so impatient or irked by certain things, etc. The gift of identification is truly incredible, friends. I had identified who I was, and through that found freedom to be ME!
As I have been coming into my type, I have loosed my leash a little and adventured outside of my comfort zone with my appearance. I got a second piercing and cutting my hair into a shoulder-length curly mane. I am wearing awesome jewelry that I would have *never* worn before Dressing Your Truth, and guess what? I feel like a flippin’ rockstar in it. 😎 Shearling vests and bleached jeans are making their way into my closet. I am wearing dynamic makeup that I have never worn before, like eyeliner and rich eyeshadow, which accentuate my exotic features and makes me feel like a million bucks every day.
And in case you were wondering: my parents are amazing, you guys. I love how they are so supportive even with these impulsive changes of mine.
These outward alterations have launched an inward change that has been incredibly healing for me. I live in a community of more soft-spoken, lower-energy friends. I usually have the loudest laugh, the heaviest tread, and the most noticeable body language. I’ve always gone for bold, head-turning outfits and crazy hairstyles. All of this I did before Dressing Your Truth, but I never understood why. I just labeled myself as passionate, loud and crazy… and left it at that.
That wore on my self-image, you guys. It wasn’t a 100% positive association, and my confidence was taking a beating. I didn’t want to admit it, but looking back I know now that I was confused and lost. I needed to identify my “why”.
Dressing Your Truth, by God’s grace, has provided that “why” for me. I don’t have any reason to label myself as boisterous and crazy now. Nope, I am swift, dynamic, and rich. I am exotic and beautiful in the unique way God made me. I don’t have to apologize for who I am. That would be like a squirrel apologizing for being squirrel-y: ridiculous.
Every day I wake up knowing that I’m a fresh, animated go-getter and that with my swift energy I am going to get stuff done. Getting dressed in the morning is like choosing clothes from my ideal closet because I love everything that I have to wear. I walk through my day feeling put-together and fabulous, and every time I take a selfie I want to change my profile picture because DANG! I look good. 😉
Dressing according to my energy type is been one of the most freeing choices I have ever made. God wants His children to take joy in how uniquely beautiful He has made each and every one of us! Dressing Your Truth has played an incredible role in my journey to understanding my unique beauty. It’s infused my life with greater confidence and purpose. And, since I understand all 4 types, I can better understand my friends and family and speak life into them and appreciate their special qualities, rather than roll my eyes at their quirks and what I might have previously defined as “shortcomings”.
I would whole-heartedly encourage you gals to look into this course for yourself! It’s not necessarily Christian, however, I love to take courses like this and find out how I can use it to God’s glory. Because of how the Lord has providentially used this course to heal my soul and help me understand who I am in Him, I believe that it has a depth & quality to it that would be uplifting to anyone that takes it. Plus, it’s free, so you can’t argue with that! 😀
I hope that you have been able to identify with some of what I wrote here and that this post will help you further discover the unique beauty that God gave you!
P.S- this isn’t a sponsored post. Just wanted to share the love & freedom I’ve found through Dressing Your Truth! 🙂
