Hey gals! Charlotte here today to share my current hair-care favorites 🙂 I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to non-toxic skin care & makeup; and now that I am growing out my hair again after 3 years of having it above-shoulder length, I am naturally getting more interested in the hair-side of things 🙂
As with my makeup favorites, I rate the toxicity by the trusty app, Think Dirty. Most of what I use is DIY or raw ingredients which I know are non-toxic and healthy; but the products that I do purchase ready-made, I always make sure to check their rating on the app 🙂 Now let’s dig in, shall we?
- Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) – However much I may despise the taste & smell of this stuff, it is by far my absolute favorite conditioner! Yes, you heard me right; no, I’m not insane 😉 Having naturally curly hair, this stuff works wonders to enhance those curls and keep them shiny & moisturized. I also deal with a dry scalp, so this in combination with a drop or two of Tea Tree Essential Oil really helps to combat that and neutralize the pH of my scalp. I use a 50/50 ratio of water & ACV, plus 1 or 2 drops Tea Tree EO, which I just measure out in a pint-size mason jar before getting into the shower.
- Shea Moisture Strengthen & Grow Shampoo – Jessica & I recently switched over to this wonderful shampoo, and absolutely love it! It’s moisturizing, and has some awesome ingredients in it to help do just what it says: strengthen & grow your hair 🙂 And even though it too has ACV in it, it smells amaaazing. That is one thing that I absolutely love to have when I can get it: nice smelling beauty products. This smells like vanilla & peppermint, which is a delicious combo in my book! Think Dirty Rating: 3
- Organix Coconut Curls Styling Milk – After getting frustrated with my crazy mane of frizz and curls, I finally broke down and decided to tame it with some curl cream. I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for when I went to Ulta to pick something up, but when I stumbled upon this, it seemed natural enough, and smelled heavenly. I put it in for the first time, and was in love with how it enhanced my curls and tamed the frizz! But then… duh duh duh… I looked up the rating of a very similar product of the same brand on Think Dirty; and would ya believe it, it was the dreaded rating of 10. The culprit for this rating? Fragrance. Gah. Of course that smell couldn’t be heavenly without a nasty health price-tag! So, I’m working through the product now, and am hoping to replace it with something more natural on down the road (I’m thinking about getting this Shea Moisture’s curl mousse). Think Dirty Rating: ~10
- NOW Jojoba Oil – I have officially joined the Jojoba Oil fan club for all things pertaining to beauty. This stuff is magical. I love to use a tablespoon or two as a hair mask the night or day before I wash my hair, to give it some extra moisture. And I might add a drop or two of Tea Tree or Lavendar EO if I’m feeling like it. It’s my favorite way to pamper my hair in the Winter time when the weather is drier and colder.
Well, that’s a wrap for my favorite, healthy hair products! Some of you may be curious as to what I use for hairspray, and let me just say: nothing special. We currently love the Garnier Fructis line. I have yet to find a brand of hairspray that is non-toxic and effective; plus I don’t use it often enough to be concerned about the long-term effects that the drugstore stuff will have on my body. If anybody has recommendations for an effective, non-toxic hairspray, I’m all ears!
