Before I begin this post I would first like to thank the Boyer Sisters for allowing me to write a guest post on their blog! From the day I discovered their delightful spot in the “blogosphere” I have eagerly looked forward to every new post of theirs whether it be written on life, singing, sewing, fashion, or vintage.
Therefore, in today’s post I bring to you the pieces in which to create a perfect spring ensemble! Now, I don’t know about you but I am the biggest fan of floral prints and floral sun dresses, and those in a 1950’s style are a fave of mine as the flowers begin to bloom and the weather begins to warm up (although the heat is much too quick in arriving here in Texas…ugh). I find that as the seasons change so does my style and my spring and summer wardrobe most often consists of floral dresses and sweaters.
As someone who not only loves vintage and fashion, but who also loves to make her own clothes, the spring and summer months bring forth a closet full of homemade floral sun dresses. I must admit that my favorite floral dresses are those in which I have utilized a sheet as the fabric! What??? A Sheet you say!!! Yes indeed 🙂 I have found that thrift stores provide me with the most unique prints on sheets and not only that, the sheets themselves are often from the 1950’s (or around that time) and therefore also allow me to make a dress which I can call “vintage” because the sheet was indeed vintage. Double bonus!
Thus, in order to create the perfect spring ensemble (or at least my favorite go to) all you need is a floral dress, cardigan, statement necklace, and pair of heels (a clog style is the most versatile). Pretty simple right! Floral sun dresses in themselves are quite versatile as you can dress them up or down simply by the accessories and footwear you choose to pair with them. That is probably why I LOVE them so much! That and they are also very comfortable. Therefore, when it comes to picking out a cardigan to pair with your dress the choices are endless! While I often seem to stick with a cropped cream cardigan that I wear way too often, I thought I would showcase a pop of color along with the floral for this ensemble 🙂 Lavender has quickly become a favorite spring color of mine (I really should have gone with lavender nail polish for this shoot…oh well) and therefore pairing it with the vibrant yellow floral seemed like a match made in Heaven! As this time of year is for joy, life, happiness and laughter, what encompasses all four of those better than a colorful life!
Apart from the dress and cardigan one must always think of the footwear and other accessories that can be paired with an ensemble. For myself personally, I see this time of the year as my chance to pull out all of my colorful statement necklaces and floral earrings to mix and match with the many prints in my closet. This necklace in particular was bought last year to go with a yellow daisy dress I had made (also out of a sheet) and when I discovered it in the store I fell head over heels in love with it as daisies are my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE flower and I knew the necklace would be a perfect addition to my meager collection 🙂 Therefore, though I find floral dresses to be statements in and of themselves, a statement necklace, no matter how simple, small, sparkly, or unique it may be, is always the perfect accessory to pair with your spring look (and quite 1950’s elegance if I do say so myself!).
Besides the obvious things such as your dress, cardigan, and jewelry, one cannot forget the footwear. Heaven forbid we forget the shoes!!! When it comes to this aspect of the perfect spring ensemble I must say that my options are vast (problems of someone who loves shoes). Nonetheless, I often stick with something simple, practical, and classic for this look and always reach for my Old Navy sandal clogs that are similar to “Lotta from Stockholm” clogs. Not only are these shoes the comfiest heels I have ever worn or ever will wear, but they are so versatile I could wear them all spring and summer long!
Dress: Me Made (thrifted sheet) / Cardigan: Thrifted (Talbots) / Shoes: Old Navy (last summer) / Necklace: Icings
In closing, if you stick to the four things discussed in this post: a floral sun dress, cardigan, statement necklace (or simple necklace), and practical heels, you will be set with an easy, cheerful, fashionable, and vintage inspired “go to” look that will carry you throughout the next couple of months. Now go raid your closet and see what you come up with to recreate this perfect spring ensemble for yourself!

Thanks so much, Madison! Isn’t her outfit simply perfection? And how clever to make a dress out of a vintage sheet! 🙂
