Hello friends! I have a fun little something to share with you all today 🙂 I am taking a little break from my Vintage Capsule Wardrobe project (a worthy break, I believe too 😉 ), and am drowning myself in finicky pink chiffon, miles of gathering threads, and LOTS of pins and basting: in other words, I am making myself a Liesl dress.
Now, those of you who, like me, grew up with the classic “Sound of Music” film are very familiar with that floaty dream-boat of a pink-chiffon dress that Liesl wears when singing “I am Sixteen going on Seventeen” and dancing with Rolf. Ever since watching that film as a little girl, I wanted a dress like Liesl’s. It was so deliciously feminine in every way: the type of dress that every girls wants in her wardrobe at some point.
So, what is the reason for recreating this delightful piece for my own wardrobe? A costume ball! 🙂 Levi (Jessica’s fiancé) and his best friend Gabe are hosting a birthday ball this February for themselves, and the attire-theme is characters from film. So what does this brunette teenager, who loves to sing and dance, do? Why, go as Liesl of course! 😉
I sketched up my battle plan, and am very, very excited with the prospects before me! The material I ordered is perfect, the mock-up for the bodice went together swimmingly (I don’t think it could get much more Liesl-ish), and the idea of dancing the night away in layers upon layers of pink chiffon just sounds blissful 🙂
Hopefully my next update on this project will be a finished garment, though we shall see. I am just getting to work on the bodice front, so I have a lot ahead of me to do. But hopefully it will be a joy and not a thready monster of shiftiness that I have heard chiffon to be.
Have you ever recreated a costume from a film before?
