I am SO excited to bring to you all today’s post! For the second edition of our Everyday Vintage series I am partnering up with a favorite vintage reproduction brand, emmy designs.
We stumbled across this magical brand last year and immediately fell in love! Their amazing selection of very high quality repro pieces are truly a joy to sift through and be inspired by. One of the factors that really tipped the scale in their favor for my sisters and I was their mission statement:
“…emmy does not follow trends but prefers to develop slowly within its own retro based style, and celebrate every woman’s unique beauty through timeless design. Nothing makes us happier than customers who return to our design simply because they have found well fitted favorites among our collections. By focusing on beauty and quality that last for years we also help slowing down the pace of the fashion industry, reduce needless mass production and thus, help protecting the environment.
When you buy an emmy piece you get real value for you money! We put a lot of thought, effort and professionalism into every detail on every piece, however, our prices are not excessive. What our customers are paying for is basically the high quality of the garments.”
Now, for a gal who is very conscious about what and where she spends her money, this was an encouraging piece to read! From their slow-fashion mindset to the detail and care that they put into their garments, I was truly sold. Like I’ve mentioned before, a huge part of dressing vintage for me is the quality that so many people overlook in the fashion industry today. Back then, most garments were made to last years and years, thus resulting in the huge selection of vintage pieces that stock the antique malls and etsy shops today. I want to recreate that same quality in my own wardrobe, whether it be via my sewing machine and the textiles & techniques that I choose, or the brands and ready-made products that I invest in. So with all of that covered in words on their website, there was only one question to be asked: do the emmy products really live up to what they say they do?
I am happy to report that yes, yes they do! I’ve had the privilege of winning one of their pieces in a giveaway last year (their green Ice Skater cardigan), and was thrilled to pieces when it came in the mail. The cardigan was double knit, making it twice as heavy and warm as your average-joe cardigan, was mostly wool in material, and intricate and very old-fashioned in design. The fit, however, was generous, which made it a little harder to style than I anticipated.
But that’s all about my first cardigan from emmy. We’re here to talk about the knitwear that I am sporting today: The Fair Isle Cardigan in Wine! I was over the moon with this sweater when I slipped it on. It is lighter-weight than it’s predecessor and thus has a better fit (hooray!), the fair isle design has me weak in the knees (I’m an absolute sucker for that pattern!), the quality is spot-on with the era its design is based on, and the functionality gets a 10 with wearability, warmth, and practicality. The feel of it is such that it is almost a happy medium between machine- & handmade. Yes, the price tag is high, but you’re investing in a piece that will be passed down for years just like the old garments we so admire today. My only quibble is the sizing. Although my sweater does fit fairly well, I think that a smaller size might have been even better, and I would love for emmy to branch out into smaller sizes.
So, you all are probably thinking at this point: “Well sure, that’s all fine and easy for you to say getting an expensive piece like that in exchange for a blog post!” To tell the truth, however, I would consider investing in a piece like this if I knew that it would last me for years and years, would get plenty of wear, and would “earn it’s keep” so-to-speak. Now, if the price tag is a little steep for you, emmy has an amazing sale section on past collections, with prices up to 85% off, that I would highly recommend to you. I am especially in love with emmy’s knitwear collection above all other items (ok, ok, so their coats are a super-close second 🙂 ). The overtly-vintage designs that are just so feminine, detailed, and practical, steal my heart! And I have a bit of an obsession in curating a unique, high-quality knitwear collection, so there is that… 😉
I paired my sweater with a few of my favorite winter staples: my pleated “Coco” skirt and beloved spats; as well as a new addition to my accessories collection: a pair of darling holiday earrings from Chronically Vintage! Jessica was so sweet to send along each of us girls a pair of Christmas earrings, and I was happily surprised to find that the pair I chose from the selection she sent us matched my emmy sweater perfectly. Score! 🙂
So what’s the verdict with emmy designs? They definitely live up to their word in quality, and their unique selection of detailed, retro-inspired garments is hard to beat! Do check them out, and take a look around their website. You may just find a new addition for your own wardrobe 🙂
