Hello my fellow vintage-eers! It’s been awhile since we have brought up the “How We Wear Vintage” series, hasn’t it? Well I thought it high time that we revive the title, as I share with you some ideas that have been mulling around my head regarding – you guessed it – ski-wear! The girls and I are planning to go skiing for the first time this winter, so what better time to dream about some vintage inspired winter wear than now? The main needs in all of our recreational wardrobes are ski-pants, since our pouffy, marshmallow snow pants just will not do anymore. So what is the vintage alternative to these modern pillow-pants? Let’s take a look!
Le sigh… Aren’t these 1930s ski styles just positively GORGEOUS!? My favorite look is the plus-fours knickers and jacket combo. We girls are going to be making ski knickers for ourselves out of wide-wale corduroy. My plus-fours will be lined in either quilting cotton or wool (I haven’t quite decided which I want to save for another project yet), and will probably be most similar in silhouette to the outfit in the forefront of the bottom illustration. I am thinking that the Wearing History Smooth Sailing Trouser pattern would be a great basis for a pattern hack. What do you think?
Illustrations are all well and good, but it helps to see what these garments look like on real people. I was so excited to find the image of Bette Davis in her winter coat, because our snow-coats (yes we have matching coats) are so similar in silhouette to her’s, only in brown: fur lined hood and elasticated waist. The only difference would be our coats are longer (closer to knee length) and have lovely large pockets perfect for holding mittens and such.
Ah! Now I have so many ideas whirring around in my head for mittens, jackets, plus fours, hats, etc. etc. etc. I know I won’t be able to sew everything that I want to, but as long as I get the plus-fours done I will be A-OK.
