Hello dears! I am so pleased to be introducing you to one of our longtime advertisers: Paula R. of Lilla Rose. Mrs. R was the first advertiser we had on this here blog, and we thought it was time that you got to know a little bit more about this lovely lady. So… without further ado…
Tell us a little about yourself, Mrs. R.
I am a homeschooling mom of 7, and love it! Our kids range in ages from 6-24.Our family is from Ohio, but we recently moved to the sunny state of Florida!
What is your mission with your business?
The mission of my business is to generate resources to help launch our children into their own particular areas of vocational calling, while also creating resources to help others, including helping other ladies, develop and run their own successful businesses. This particular business mission coincides with our overall family mission which is to seek, above all else, God’s purpose for us in His world.
How did you get started?
Well, I first saw the flexi clip at a homeschool convention over four years ago, and was very intrigued! I tried one on and was immediately hooked! I had never before been able to find anything that would hold up all my thick hair, or look good doing so…barrettes would either not fit, or pop out at inopportune times, and the claw was just this big, gaudy piece of cheap plastic. So I was amazed at how this simple hairclip could be so beautiful and classy, yet work so well!
Then, that summer I lost my flexi clip when I went camping, and I was devastated! I couldn’t live without it! So I searched online to find a replacement…when talking with the company, I found that I could sell them, and I thought, “Why not?…If I love them so much, surely other ladies will as well!” It seemed like a no-brainer!
Around the same time, I found out that friends of ours were adopting! I was so excited for them, and wanted to help them…Lilla Rose seemed like the perfect opportunity to do so! I had also read that a favorite blog of mine was going to start accepting advertisers, so it seemed like a perfect combination…a Lilla Rose adoption fundraiser on a lovely blog! I think I stayed up pretty late that night, waiting for the post to go live. That was the first time that Lilla Rose had been featured online, and it has ended up being a great way to spread the word about an amazing product that helps so many busy moms and their daughters save time on their hair without looking frumpy…they could finally have beautiful hair in seconds!
Describe your day to us.
My day is divided between school, business, cleaning, laundry, and cooking. Most of my teaching now is oversight, with most of my direct teaching being done with my youngest son. I am his primary teacher and we are focused on reading, writing, and arithmetic. The older kids help teach the younger. My 18 year old son teaches mathematics to my 11 and 9 year old children as well as physical education for the four youngest. My 21 year old son teaches history, science, and writing, while my 24 year old daughter teaches art. I will have to say that there would be no way I could run this business without the help of my family! We all work together to keep the household running!
My husband joined me as a partner in Lilla Rose over a year ago, so now it is not something that I am just off doing by myself anymore. Most of my kids are also employed in the business in some way, so it is really becoming a family business for us and no longer just “my” business. We also spend time regularly brainstorming and exploring a variety of new business ideas together, which I love!
As a wife and Mother, what would you say is the most fulfilling/satisfactory thing you do for your family?
It is very fulfilling to be able to spend time in conversation all together as a family, or individually with each child. Time and conversation throughout the day, is where discipleship happens, and heart-strings are tied. Laughter is great as well!
What are some things you dread when you wake up in the morning?
Answering interview questions! lol
Coffee or tea?
Coffee! I never tried it till I met my future husband…he jokingly told me that I had to learn to like it so we could go out and have coffee together! So, you’d better believe that I learned to like it!
What do you like to do for the sake of having fun?
I love to garden…I find it very relaxing and rewarding, with lessons that apply to real life! I love to read. I also enjoy destroying any challenger in a game of Scrabble. 😉 And lastly, I love long walks on the beach in the sunset!
What are some final thoughts you could share with all of us?
While very rewarding, it can be very hard to balance a home and a business, so if you decide to undertake something like this, be sure to count the cost. Listen to your husband (or father), and keep him involved, as he often sees things that we miss. Involve your children if you are able. Always be aware of the time you are putting into it, and make sure it is not taking away from your family. Never send the message that your business is more important than they. If you are able to be watchful of these things, then a home business is something I highly recommend and can offer your family fun, freedom and fulfillment!!!
Thank you so much Mrs. R. for sharing with us! I hope you all enjoyed reading through her answers as much as we girls did.
Any questions you would like to ask Mrs. R.?
How do you balance your other duties/business with family life?
