Hello friends! How’s about a first outfit post of the year? Isn’t that funny to say? There are so many firsts happening for so many people right now. I remember at our NYE party with all our good friends, the little girls were giggling at their clever remarks that they “haven’t eaten since LAST YEAR!” 😉 A not-so-fun first for us, this year, is getting sick. What a way to ring in the New Year, right? Somehow I have managed to skip over coming down with the cold/flu (though I do predict myself catching it in the next few days… we’ll see what happens 😉 ), so I am the main one holding down the “web-fort” until the girls come back to full health. So, I guess you’re stuck with me for now 🙂
With New Year firsts also come New Year resolutions. Posts keep popping up in my Bloglovin’ feed for “so-and-so’s new year’s resolutions” or “plans for 2015”, etc. A few years ago, I might have been hurrying to find the nearest note pad to scratch out a few for myself. But as the years have gone on, I find myself being less of a list maker and more of a “we’ll see where life takes us” type of gal.
I guess this can be both a weakness and strength. Weakness in that I don’t hold myself to any specific commitments. Strength in that I don’t try to plan out my life according to a list. The things that I come up with always seem… impractical. Cliché. And just not a long-time motivating resolve.
However, I can’t help but feel like a fresh, new person with 2015, ready for molding & changing; excited for the adventures and challenges God has in store. Thus, I have allowed myself to come up with a few new activities to enact in 2015, that I hope to be simple, yet practical & motivating for a longer time period. Here’s what I’ve come up with:
Keep a Calendar
So, this one is super simple but also super huge for me. I know that dozens of you probably keep annual calendars hanging up on your bedroom or kitchen wall, and diligently scratch out the days as they pass. This used to be a routine activity for me when I was younger, but as Junes bled into Julys, my calendar would hang unflipped, unchecked, unheeded, until finally I nixed the log altogether. Well, I asked for a calendar for Christmas this year, and “ask and you shall receive” was never truer. I now have the most beautiful wall-log you have ever seen, and look forward to devotedly checking off each day as it passes.
Study the Bible
Ok, so this one is super cliché, but I do not mean it in any light-hearted way. I was reflecting on my lack of study in God’s word in the past years, and it dawned on me that meditating on the Word of the Lord should have just as high a priority as my school work does. Each morning I diligently get up and go through each of my subjects. If I don’t and slack off, then there are natural consequences that I know you all are aware of. Why isn’t studying God’s word in the same place mentally as school work is? Well, this is my reasoning, and I pray that it is God’s will that I stick to it, and make it more of a thoughtful habit then dutiful work.
Years ago I purchased myself a set of watercolor pencils with the resolve to learn to use them and master the art of watercolor painting. I have always been drawn to the delicate, imperfect gradient-filled strokes of the fluid paint, and did attempt it for a while. Yesterday, I picked it up again for the first time in too long, with a new vision and focus. Instead of trying to create realistic artwork that looks like a photo as before, instead I’ll aim for the caricature/doodle style and see where that takes me. We’ll see how it goes 🙂
Blouse: Thrifted (Express) // Sweater: Thrifted (Boden) // Skirt: Refashioned (see here) // Coat: ModCloth (old) // Shoes: Thrifted (Söfft) // Necklace: Origami Owl // Gloves: Gift (Target, last year)
If you were to ask any member of my family who was the clown out of us, they would definitely point a finger at me. 🙂 I saw these left-over trimmings from our Christmas tree on the front porch when Brigid and I were taking these photos, and couldn’t resist…. 😀
