One of our girls’ very favorite things to do is to watch the outtakes and bloopers from youtube videos (Blimey Cow, anyone?) and movies, and go behind the scenes on what goes into those productions. So, budding out of this love for insights to the “behind the scenes”, we thought, why not share with you all what goes on around here in the production of blog posts, our singing, etc.? We hope you enjoy!
Development & Planning
Before any posts begin production (photo-shoots, editing, writing up), we have a weekly blog meeting on Monday (now you know why no post goes up on that day!) to review what will be going up this week, and plan out the next. This is where post ideas are developed, weather checked for good photo-shoot days, as well as big ideas and productions introduced, like advertising & music videos for our BFS youtube channel.
Production
After the blog meeting, lots and lots of photo-shoots are put into action throughout the week, maybe having two on Mondays, as, like I said before, no posts go up that day. You know Jessica’s Hope Chest series? Well, the view above gives you the perfect picture of our set-up for the shoots for those posts. Nothing at all fancy: unprofessional lighting (get the tutorial here!), an old kitchen table insert, a white plastic table cloth left over from Brigid’s big birthday party, and a lovely, blank wall to shoot against. We make do with what we have 🙂 I have big dreams of large-aperture lenses, professional lighting, and BIG white backdrops… all in good time I suppose…
After the photos are taken, each morning after school, I hunker down in front of the laptop and upload all the photos for that day’s post. After they are uploaded, I call the author of post over, and they select which photos they would like for their article. I then set to work editing, resizing, uploading to flickr, and pasting image codes into the post editor of blogger. After that, the post is ready to be written up; after which task one of us will read through it to make sure no typos have presented themselves (let me tell you, many always do!) The post is then published and sent across the internet on our social medias.
So, that is pretty much what goes on everyday behind the scenes of the blog! Nothing very special, yet I can’t help but realize how much time and heart goes into each and every article these days, as compared to some of our first blog posts. We girls laugh when we look back at the old days of producing the entirety of a post (photo-shoot and all!) in one day!
This is interesting; I like when I read and can see that people have put thought into brushing up their posts. Typos kill me, especially in the homeschool blogging world . . . I just feel like everybody (I know I am paranoid) is harder on us whether or not they are justified. I try to spend a couple of days on each post to flesh it out and to check for typos. I feel like the post starts burning into my brain after I have worked on it for some time, so that I can no longer detect typos; therefore, I need a day to rest. I even try to reread a lot of my comments to be careful of typos since I tend to write (too) long comments with (over)complicated sentences 😛
This was so fun! Thank you for sharing, Charlotte. It certainly helps me to appreciate your lovely blog even more! I do hope that we get to see more posts like this. 🙂

This was really interesting! It sounds like you girls put a lot of work into the blog, and it definitely shows. 🙂 I like seeing how you do your photo shoots for the Hope Chest Series. It’s always encouraging to see how great shots can be taken without a lot of complicated equipment or a fancy studio!
I loved this peek into how you schedule and plan your posts! 🙂 I’m realizing more and more how much WORK it is to have a blog! I am so much more in awe of all those that do such a professional job at it. 🙂
I love this! You girls really put a lot of work into this! I always admire how professional this blog is, and now I know why!:)

I love to know the behind the scenes! 🙂 Things like that really intrigue and interest me.
I hope you plan to do more of these posts in the future! 🙂

interesting post! I’m new here but I already like it. I have to say that I enjoyed the Blimey Cow mention and that my posts don’t have that much planning !
This was a great post! I too love when I can see some behinds the scenes videos/photos from blogs and movies. It’s very encouraging that all the lovely photos on your blog are created with equipment found at home…of course the person behind the lens helps with that too!
