This year marks year 3 for Jessica and her white homing pigeons. From Autumn until today the doves, we call them that even though they are pigeons, have had to stay in their loft because of the danger of hawk attacks. One of her doves has been eaten by a nasty ‘ol resident hawk. Along with this danger, Jessica lost some of her doves during her summer training sessions. They just never returned home after a release, it happened a little at a time with one or two not returning. We like to think those “non-returners” are living happily on someone’s farm picking at the corn in their silos. We have seen a few flocks which hang around those silos. If those flocks are out flying we try to spot an all white one or two in the bunch. No luck yet. What we would do if we saw one? Oh I don’t know….stop the car and have Jessica whistle it back home. HA.
Jessica has 22 total birds as of today. She was down to 12 last Autumn at the time of “closing the loft” for the season so the birdies have been busy with nests this spring! Recently Jessica has found some different information about training for releases so we are anxious to get out there and try again. Jess would like to wait a few more weeks so all the young ones can go through the training too.
